Canal Saint-Martin

サンマルタン運河

When I hear Canal Saint-Martin, what comes to my mind is the film, “Amelie”. But Canal Saint-Martin in late autumn is more dramatic, so maybe a more mature romantic film or suspense film may be suitable. I’m going to change my kicks to heels and change into double jackets from my daily blousons to make myself look chic.

サンマルタン運河と聞いて思い起こすのは映画『アメリ』だけれど、晩秋のサンマルタン運河はドラマティックで、大人の恋愛映画やサスペンスが似合う。スニーカーをパンプスに、ブルゾンをダブル仕立てのジャケットに着替えて、シックに決めるのもいい。

Musee de la Via Romantique

ロマン派美術館

There is an elegant mansion, and the plants are gayly growing their branches and leaves in the garden. Romanticism artists gathered here as their salon, back in the beginning of the 19th Century. Thinking of Georges Sand, I have got my felt hat on and sipping expresso with a lot of sugar. This place is now open as a museum. In the salon de thé situated in the garden, chic Parisian madams are enjoying conversation with friends.

植物がのびのびと枝葉を伸ばす庭園、そこに佇む瀟洒な邸宅。19世紀の初めごろ、ここはロマン主義のアーティストたちが集ったサロンだった。ジョルジュ・サンドを想って、フェルトハットでお砂糖たっぷりのエスプレッソをひと口。美術館として開かれている今は、庭園に併設されたサロン・ド・テで、マダムたちがおしゃべりに花を咲かせている。

Musee Picasso

ピカソ美術館

This is one of the most popular museums in Paris, where fans from around the world gather. But every time I visit there, there is always a new discovery. It is full of charm. And that captivates us all. Not to mention all the work on display, but the interior is also brilliant, with furniture by Giacometti here and there. When I found this houndstooth cardigan, the checkered tiles in the museum automatically came into my mind, and I thought, how lucky I am!

世界中のファンが訪れる、超メジャーな美術館だけど、何度訪れても新しい発見がある。そして世界中のファンを虜にする、その魅力が詰まった場所。作品はもちろん、ジャコメッティの家具がさりげなく配されたインテリアも素敵なのだ。この千鳥格子のカーディガンを見つけた時、あの市松模様のタイルを思い出して、わたしはなんてラッキーなんだろうと思った。

A Bookshop

本屋

Ofr, is a bookshop situated in a so-called hip area in north Marais. You find people that look like belong to art or fashion industries, but I always spend so much time because it is so comfortable. First of all I lightly check the magazines close to the entrance, and then go on to roughly classified visual books and photography books. Not just books, the selected items they display are so sweet, and I always lose my mind. So, whenever I go to Ofr, I put on this scarf to keep me calm.

北マレの、いわゆるヒップな場所にある ブックショップ「Ofr.」。いかにも業界っぽいお客さんもいるけれど、なぜだか居心地がよくていつも長居してしまう。入口付近の雑誌を軽く眺めてから、ざっくりジャンル分けされたビジュアル本や写真集、セレクトされた雑貨も可愛く、心が乱されてしまう。だから冷静な自分を保てるように、ここへ行く時は必ず、お守りがわりのスカーフを巻くのだ。

The Dogs in Paris

パリの犬

Paris is a city of dogs. And somehow the dogs in Paris look slightly miserable and for me that is just so cute. Wherever I am, I observe dogs and I am attracted to dog motifs. I love dogs. I turned out to be like this when I encountered this figurine of an old hound which I thought looked like myself. I was wearing this lettered sweat then. Now I am a bit grown up, so I am wearing it with a black skirt, not jeans.

パリは犬の街。そしてパリの街で見かける犬は、なぜかちょっと情けない感じがして、そこにきゅんとする。わたしはいつでもどこにいても、犬を観察するし、犬のモチーフに心惹かれる。犬という生き物が大好きだ。そんな風になったのは、とても他人（？）とは思えない、この古い猟犬のフィギュリンに出会ったことがきっかけだった。その時着ていたレタードスウェット、少し大人になったから、今はジーンズじゃなくて黒いスカートを合わせてみる。

Flamingos in the Zoo

動物園のフラミンゴ

There is something about the white and pink marble-ness of flamingos. It is nice. In the small zoo at the botanical garden in Quartier-Latin, there are so many pink and white fashionable birds. I dyed my hair pink, with roses of the same color in my arms. I am wearing a pair of leopard pants, trying to be as fashionable as they are.

フラミンゴは、ピンクと白のマーブル加減がしゃれている。カルチェ・ラタンの植物園の中にある、小さな動物園には、ピンクと白のおしゃれさんがたくさんいるんだ。ピンク色に髪を染めて、同じ色のバラを抱えて、レオパード柄のパンツで、わたしも精一杯おしゃれして。

Blue Pastels

ターコイズ色のパステル

After the visit to the zoo, I was inspired to draw. I went into this art supply store on the way back and found these pastels. I fell in love with blue gradient. It goes so well with my turquoise ring! This made my day, no?

動物園からの帰り道、絵心を刺激されて、ふらりと立ち寄った画材屋さんで見つけたパステル。ブルーのグラデーションにぐっときた。大好きなターコイズのリングとお揃いでごきげん。

A Park

公園

If I ever could live in Paris, I would like to live close to a park. I am going to put my favorite sweat tops and bottoms and walk my dog. If I get a big dog, how about living close to the Luxembourg Garden? I want to run around energetically with Parisian joggers.

もしパリに住むことができるなら、公園のそばがいい。お気に入りのスウェットを着て、犬を散歩させるのだ。大型犬を飼ったなら、リュクサンブール公園なんかどうかしら。ジョギングするパリジャンに混じって、元気いっぱい駆け回りたいの。

Serge Gainsbourg

セルジュ・ゲンズブール

When he died on the 2nd of March 1991, I was not yet born. My Dad worshipped everything Serge Gainsbourg created. So, when he knew of his passing, he jumped onto a flight to Paris. On rue de Verneuil, in the 7th arrondissement, there is a wall covered with graffiti. He used to live here. I want to visit that place one day, to feel that ardor of those days. I am going to wear a striped top, like the one his daughter Charlotte wears.

1991年3月2日、彼がこの世を去った日、わたしはまだ生まれていない。彼が作り出すものすべてに心酔していたわたしのパパは、訃報を聞くといてもたってもいられずに、パリ行きのチケットを手に飛行機に飛び乗ったらしい。7区の閑静な住宅街、ヴェルヌイユ通りに落書きだらけの壁がある。ここは彼がかつて暮らしていた場所。当時の熱狂を感じに、いつかわたしも訪ねてみたい。彼の愛娘、シャルロットのように、ボーダーのニットで。

Iron Stairs

My favorite things are flight jackets and art-nouveau style black iron decoration. They look rigid, but flexible and full of contradiction. They are so romantic. When I can fly freely in the sky, I want to immerse myself in the dream to the fullest.

わたしの心を躍らせるもの。フライトジャケット、アールヌーヴォー様式の黒い鉄の装飾。ハードだけどしなやかで、矛盾に満ちている。なんといってもロマンを感じさせてくれるのがいい。自由に空を飛んで行けるようになったら、思う存分ロマンに浸りたい。

Grande Voliere du Jardin des Plantes

鳥類園

Decorated with gorgeous ironwork, it looks like a gigantic birdcage.
I accidentally came in front of this place while walking in The Jardin des Plantes de Paris in Quartier-Latin. It was a paradise of forgotten birds. I am going to look at all of them with my brand-new pair of glasses. Those with beautiful feathers fly from tree to tree. Some are moving leisurely in the small pond. Are they ducks, maybe? Suddenly the autumn sunset through the glass wall hit my eyes, and I closed my eyes in an instant.

華麗な鉄の細工に彩られた、まるで巨大な鳥籠。カルチェ・ラタンの植物園を散歩していたら、偶然行き当たったそこは、忘れ去られた鳥たちの楽園だった。新調したばかりのメガネをかけて、つぶさに見よう。木々を飛び交うきれいな羽を持つ鳥、小さな池を悠々と進むのはカモだろうか。不意にガラス越しに差し込んできた秋の夕陽が眩しくて、思わず目を瞑った。

Beaujolais Nouveau

You don’t have to be that grateful to drink this, some people say. But I like opening the bottle courteously on the release date (the third Thursday of November) and say “merci” to the God of grapes. It is light and clean and fresh, and I tend to drink too much of it. What happens next? I roll over on the floor. Oh please! The Goddess of Mode, Madame Chanel is going to be mad at me!

ありがたがって飲むほどのものでもない、なんていう人もいるけれど、折り目正しく解禁日（毎年11月の第三木曜日）にボトルを開けて、ぶどうの神様に「メルシー」と言いたい。口当たりがよくフレッシュで、つい飲み過ぎて、床にごろん。あーあ、モードの神様、シャネルさまに叱られそうだ。

The Color of Le Corbusier

It has a nice and light appearance on the exterior. The use of color, too. Le Corbusier is a Master of Architecture, but what he built for his own house has a kind of effortlessness and not dense. In the coming season of wearing coats, I want to keep such nimble state of mind.

外観も、そしてこの色使いも、軽やかだな、と思った。巨匠建築家として知られるル・コルビュジエが、個人のために建てた邸宅は、程よい抜け感があって重々しくない。コートを着る季節になっても、軽快なマインドでいたいと思う。

A Small Crossing

ある交差点

It was the last time I visited Paris. I was walking from my favorite boulangerie to my hotel. I instantly fell in love with the feet of this Madam, who I saw at the small crossing by the Canal Saint-Martin. She briskly disappeared to the other side of the street, but she was wearing the most beautiful and delicate heels and she had carefully applied pedicures. I wanted to copy her, but somehow, I thought it would be more me, if I wore these heels with socks on.

前回パリを訪れた時のこと、お気に入りのブーランジュリーからホテルへの帰り道だった。サンマルタン運河沿いの小さな交差点で、わたしは一目惚れしたのだった。あっという間に颯爽と、道の反対側へ消えていったマダムの足元に。とっても華奢できれいなパンプスと、丁寧に塗られたペディキュア。真似してみたけどなんだか違うし、ソックスを合わせた方がわたしらしいのかもと思った。

メリーゴーランド

That summer in Paris was it! The night before the Bastille Day, my friends and I were having a blast from late afternoon at one corner of the Tuileries Garden, waiting to look at the fireworks. It was past 10 pm, when it finally started to get dark, we found this carousel with millions of electric lights twinkling. We were on these rotating wooden horses and screaming. Was it real? I don’t know but this year I am dancing by myself with my leopard boots on in a faraway place.

あの夏のパリはごきげんだった。革命記念日の夜、花火を見るために夕方からチュイルリー公園の一角を陣取って、仲間たちと大はしゃぎ。夜10時を過ぎてようやく暗くなってきたころ、無数の電飾が煌めくメリーゴーランドを見つけた。くるくる回る木馬、歓声をあげるわたしたち。果たしてあれは現実だったのだろうか。今は、遠く離れた場所で一人、レオパードのブーツでステップを踏む。

The River Seine

セーヌ川

The city of Paris has an enormous gravity. You visit there once, and you fall in love. The river Seine runs through the middle of the city, many bridges are built over it and you walk on stoned pavements and feel different hues of brick buildings. Walk in this city with a grey jacket and a pair of white denim, yes, the very basic ones. Everyday life here is flooded with classics and romantics.

パリという街には、とても大きな引力があって、一度訪れたら誰もが恋してしまう場所。街の真ん中を流れるセーヌ川、そこにかかるいくつもの橋、周りには石畳やレンガの色彩。グレーのジャケットにホワイトデニム、ベーシックなおしゃれがよく似合う、日常にクラシックとロマンティックが横溢する。

What to eat in Paris? This is a big question and there are numerous places I need to go, but I must go to Le Relais de L’Entrecote, before anywhere else. They only have one menu, “Steak Frites”. Once you sit at the table, you will be only asked one question: “how do you want your steak done?”. Oh, how cute are the white aprons on the madams that serve us! At least I can go there with a white shirt on.

パリに行ったら食べるべきもの。数えきれないほどたくさんあるけれど、何はともあれ「ル・ルレ・ドゥ・ラントレコート」に駆けつけたい。ここのメニューはたったひとつ、ステーキフリットだ。テーブルにつけば聞かれるのはその焼き加減だけ。サーブしてくれるマダムの、白いエプロンのキュートさよ。わたしはせめて白いシャツを着ていこうかしら。

The Fountain in Saint-Sulpice Place

サンシュルピス広場の噴水

Place Saint-Sulpice features the Fountain of the Four Bishops that were of great importance during the reign of Sun King, or Louis XIV. Their prayers transcend time. I respectfully accept their prayers in a solemn and generous black attire.

サンシュルピス教会前にある噴水に鎮座するのは、太陽王、ルイ14世の時代に活躍した４人の枢機卿。400年の彼方から、聖なる祈りを捧げる。厳格で寛容な黒い服で、恭しく受け止めよう。

The Metro

メトロ

Parisians tend to stay within the areas where they live. But I am a traveler, so I move inside the city of Paris on metro、in all directions, from east to west, south to north. When I go to a tea salon in the 8th arrondissement, I am wearing heels, and when I go to the flea market in Vanves, I put on my boots. That’s why I have so many shoes in my suitcase!

パリジャンは自分が住んでいるエリアからあまり出ないものらしい。旅人であるわたしは、メトロに乗ってパリの街を西から東へ、南から北へ、縦横無尽に移動する。8区の高級住宅街にあるティーサロンに行くときはヒールのパンプスで、ヴァンブの蚤の市へはブーツを履いて。だからわたしのスーツケースには、靴が何足も入っている。

My Friend’s Apartment

友達の家

There is an old and small appartement close to Belleville station. Maybe the main dweller is Pepe, a bull-terrier. But inside the room with a red door, there lives an irreplaceable friend of mine that gives me so much inspiration and comfort. I am dreaming of the day when I can come to see her the next time. I will be there with full of souvenirs and clad myself with something suitable for that red door.

ベルヴィル駅からほど近い、古くて小さなアパルトマン。ブルテリアのベベが陣取る、赤い扉がある部屋には、いつもわたしに刺激と癒しをくれるかけがえのない友人が住んでいる。お土産をたくさん抱えて、赤い扉に似合う服を着て、次はいつ会いに行けるだろう。

Wild Flamingos Inhabiting Camargue

カマルグのフラミンゴ

It’s been years. I was inspired by a book written by Peter Mayle, called “A Year in Provence”, and went on a trip. Everything that came into my eyes was just impressive, and the trip was so therapeutic. Of all the beautiful experiences, one I cannot forget was the wild flamingos storming up. If I can ever be in that scene again, I will definitely wear something beige. Then I can melt into the landscape to make the pink of flamingos stand out.

もう何年も前、ピーター・メイルの『南仏プロヴァンスの12か月』に触発されて、旅に出たことがある。目にする何もかもが鮮烈で、心洗われる日々。とりわけカマルグで見た、野生のピンクフラミンゴが飛び立つ姿は忘れられない。もう一度あの風景を見ることができるなら、今度はベージュ色の服を着ていこう。景色の一部に溶け込んで、フラミンゴのピンクを際立たせたいから。

Le Splendid

ル・スプレンディッド

I love theaters. The energy of performers and audience collide, and you can get a once-in-a-lifetime experience. There is a mysteriously lit neon sign on rue Saint-Martin, situated in a slightly obscene area of St. Denis. I am waiting for the curtain to rise, sitting on one of the red seats at Le Splendid, which was created during the Belle-Epoque period. They are showing a comedy program today, so I am wearing a relaxing knitwear, getting ready to laugh.

演者と観客のエネルギーがぶつかり合い、その時だけしかできない体験がある、劇場という場所が好きだ。ちょっぴり猥雑なサン・ドニのサンマルタン通りに、怪しく灯るネオンサイン。ベルエポックの時代にオープンした「ル・スプレンディッド」の赤いシートに座って、緞帳が上がるのを待つ。今日の演目はコメディだから、リラックスできるニットで、思いっきり笑う準備も万全だ。
