What kind of clothes would I want beside me, or on my body, when I reach the end of my life? This season’s creation began with that question, sparked by watching the wardrobe my grandmother, who turns 91 this year, continues to choose almost unconsciously, even as she lives with dementia.
My grandmother tells me stories of experiences and memories from before I was born. From time to time, she also speaks about matters of appearance—clothes, makeup, hairstyles—and looks at my long hair or my younger brother’s dreadlocks with a gentle smile. She was one of the early graduates of Bunka Fashion College, skilled in sewing and deeply knowledgeable. When I was in high school, she once repaired a pair of chinos for me after the seat had torn. In many ways, she has become like a great senior to me.
The FOLL cardigan I gave her four years ago on Respect for the Aged Day is something she still wears with care. Seeing her in it reminds me once again of the beauty of spending a long stretch of time with a single piece of clothing. At the same time, it is a sight that makes me reconsider the meaning and responsibility of creating new clothes.
Clothing does not affect the body as directly as food, nor does it shape one’s lifestyle in the way a home does. Clothes are, above all, something to be worn. Among the essentials of clothing, food, and shelter, I believe clothing is the one that most strongly carries the meaning of a tool.
With that in mind, this season we set out to create clothes that can accompany the wearer over a long period of time—pieces that grow and deepen alongside them. Using original natural materials that bring out the inherent beauty of their raw fibers, we pursued a wardrobe with an authentic, comfortable presence and the practicality to support everyday life.
My hope is that the pieces from this season will become trusted companions to those who choose them, and that they will be loved for many years to come.
